The word  ” pigment ” derives from the Latin pigmentum ــ pingere to paint.
Colored organic or in organic solids which are insoluble in the vehicle or substrate in which they are incorporated. They alter appearance by selective absorption (coloration ability) and scattering of light (hiding power ability). Pigments are dispersed in vehicles or substrates retaining their crystal or particulate structure throughout the coloration process.

As the name implies, the main purpose of such materials is simply to extend the more expensive white and colored pigments so cheapening the paint formulation.
However, the use of such pigments contributes much more to the paint’s properties such as flow properties (rheology) , stability to sedimentation (anti-settling) and film strength.

Substances included in a paint formulation at a low level which has a marked effect on the properties of the paint.

Large molecules of multiple repetitions (monomers) responsible for film formation.
